Connecting a new Stripe Account for Payouts
For Merchants, Violet supports disconnecting the current Stripe Standard or Stripe Express account you are using for payouts and replacing them with new ones to enable your changing business needs.
This also lets you switch from using a Stripe Standard account for payouts to a Stripe Express account for payouts, and vice versa. If you are switching from a Stripe Standard account, there is no impact to that account when creating a Stripe Express account. Stripe Express accounts live within the platform you are connecting to and is used only to receive funds from the payment relationship with that channel. As a result, you may have multiple Stripe Express accounts set up through Violet, all connected to different channels.
The following steps walk you through connecting a new Stripe account for payouts:
Begin the process
To begin this process navigate to merchant.violet.io/settings/payouts and select the option to “Migrate” to a different Stripe account for payouts.
This will not impact the Stripe account that you are currently using.
Confirm the migration
Since payouts are impacted by this change, Violet requires that you confirm your intention to connect a new account. Once this is done, you will see both Stripe accounts side by side, as shown below: Left: Your current Stripe account Right: The new Stripe account you are connecting
Complete KYC
If you are adding a new Stripe Express account, you must complete the KYC (Know Your Customer) verification on Stripe. You can do this by clicking on “Go To Stripe” on the account to the right.
This will redirect you to Stripe where you will be guided through an onboarding process to complete the KYC requirements. Once this is done, click “Submit” and you will be redirected back to Violet.
Activate the new account
After completing the steps on Stripe, you will be redirected back to Violet. Both accounts will now appear in a “Ready” state. If everything looks correct, click Migrate to finalize the transition and start receiving payouts to the new account.
Your previous Stripe account will remain accessible through Stripe or the Violet dashboard but will no longer be used for payouts to the connected sales channel.
Accessing deactivated accounts
Once the migration is complete, your previous accounts will be listed below the newly active account. To access them:
- Click Go to Stripe for Express accounts.
- If the account was a Stripe Standard account, log in directly via the Stripe Dashboard.
Canceling a Migration
You can cancel the migration anytime before clicking the Migrate button by selecting Cancel. This will:
- Remove the link to the new account.
- Keep using the original account for payouts as if no migration was started.
Refunds and Migrations
Refunds for orders are tied to the account that received the payout. If a refund occurs after switching accounts, Violet will attempt to reverse the transfer from the original payout account.
- This applies only during the remorse period (default: 30 days from order date).
- Refunds for orders processed before the migration will be handled through the original account.
Creating a new account within the same account type
In some cases it may be desirable to move to a new account with the same type (i.e. Express -> Express).
If you need to initiate this process, please contact Violet.
Change of Ownership
A particular case to move to a new account within the same type is due to a change in ownership of the merchant or channel, requiring funds to be deposited in a new, separate bank account.
In this particular case, it’s important to remember that the same refunds considerations apply as usual.
Payment history and Distribution records for past transactions will continue to point to the old account. New transactions will point to the new account. These will all still be visible through the Violet dashboard.
